United Nations official Richard Falk – who has among other things blamed America and Israel for the Boston Marathon terror attack, posted anti-Semitic cartoons on his blog, and suggested that America was complicit in Al Qaeda’s attack on the World Trade Center in 2001 – is responding to a round of recent criticism with something less than confident repose:

“I don’t intend to resign, and there doesn’t seem to be any formal initiative that is seeking my dismissal,” Mr. Falk said at a briefing. “My role of trying to speak honestly about the situation that Palestinians are facing under this condition of prolonged occupation generates this sort of reaction that tries to paint anti-Israeli criticism as a form of anti-Semitism.”

Falk is tasked by the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) with monitoring Israeli activity in areas beyond the country’s 1948 borders. He was recently described by U.S. Ambassador Eileen Chamberlain Donahoe as “unfit to serve.”

His mandate is among several UNHRC tasks and agenda items devoted specifically to Israel. The Jewish state is also the subject of the only permanent UNHRC agenda item that focuses on a single country.

Critics have pointed out that the organization’s credibility in criticizing Israel is not helped by what appears to be borderline-obsessive focus on the Jewish state.
