Israel’s internal security service has in recent weeks broken up several Hamas terror cells run by West Bank college students, The Jerusalem Post reported Sunday.
Muhammad Aazi, 20, and Noor Aldin Ghaith, 22, both West Bank residents, were arrested for plotting ambushes of vehicles. They had planned to spread nails along the road, which would force vehicles to stop, after which they could attack. The Shin Bet confiscated their weapons during the investigation.
The investigation of that group led the Shin Bet to break up a different cell in the West Bank town of Biddu, which in 2015 planted explosive devices, threw Molotov cocktails at soldiers, and attacked a community near Jerusalem. The cell was planning future shooting attacks.
The Shin Bet also announced that it had worked with other Israeli security agencies to break up a ring at Bir Zeit University that had helped plan rallies, raise funds, and recruit operatives for Hamas. The Iran-backed terror group has a strong presence at the campus, and its student branch has won two recent student union elections there.
“The Shin Bet together with the IDF will continue to work with determination to thwart and foil terrorist activities,” the agency said in a statement.
