Iran and Argentina will set a joint commission to investigate the 1994 bombing of the Jewish community center in Buenos Aires that killed 85 people and injured more than 100. Israeli officials expressed surprise at the decision inasmuch as Iran has been widely linked to the attack, and in fact Argentinean judges have issued arrest warrants for Iranian officials linked to the case. A spokesman for the Simon Wiesenthal Center blasted the announcement, describing it as a “farce… [that] will whitewash terrorism.” American and Israeli officials have expressed concern at Argentinean-Iranian rapprochement for months, and analysts expressed surprise that Buenos Aires would be willing to grant a diplomatic victory to a country widely suspected of having violated its sovereignty and murdered its citizens.
