Day 46 – Appeal for Extradition; Resort in Ashdod; Mortar Kills 4 Year Old

Today was the forty sixth day of Operation Protective Edge.

The Tower today covered the appeal of Shurat Hadin – Israel Law Center to United States Attorney General Eric Holder to demand that Turkey extradite Hamas commander, Saleh al-Arouri, to the United States for prosecution for his role in the kidnapping and murder of American citizen, Naftali Fraenkel. Fraenkel, along with Eyal Yifrach and Gil-ad Shaar were kidnapped in June by members of Hamas. This week al-Arouri took credit for the kidnapping in recorded remarks at a conference in Turkey.

Israel21C told of plans of the Fattal hotel chain to open a resort hotel in Ashdod. CEO David Fattal told Globes, ” “We believe in Israeli tourism and we will continue to invest here and bring tourists from Israel and abroad to the southern region. Ashdod has one of the most beautiful coastal strips in Israel and in a time of peace can become, like Ashkelon, the southern Riviera.”

Earlier today it was reported that a mortar round fired from Gaza killed a four year old boy in Nahal Oz. Later it was reported that the source of the fatal round was near a school. Overall over 130 rockets were fired into Israel today.

The successful (and one uncertain) assassination attempts of top Hamas commanders this week “inevitably erode those groups’ command and control capabilities, as top figures become suspicious of each other and scale back their electronic communications.”

Hamas executed 18 people – including seven outside a mosque – on the suspicion that they helped Israel. The victims were said to have “been subject to a ‘ruling of revolutionary justice.’”

Israel21C reports that researchers from Hebrew University led by Prof. Amos Frumkin have discovered the deepest cave in Israel. The newly discovered cave “[reached] a depth of 187 meters below ground” and is located near the border with Lebanon.
