IAEA officials are still attempting to restart negotiations with Iran. Failed talks this month were the latest in a series of unsuccessful negotiation attempts, including diplomatic efforts held in February, June, August, and December of 2012. A senior Iranian lawmaker has suggested Tehran will only cooperate with officials from the UN’s nuclear watchdog if it was granted immediate sanctions relief in return. Given recent statements by both U.S. and E.U. officials that the Iranians are stalling for time to get closer to acquiring nuclear weapons, it is unlikely that Tehran’s request will be treated as acceptable.
