IDF Thwarts Infiltration from Gaza; One Terrorist Killed, Two Others Captured

The IDF thwarted an infiltration attempt from Gaza, leaving one terrorist dead, and two in Israeli custody, The Times of Israel reported Monday. A fourth infiltrator escaped back to Gaza.

According to the IDF, the infiltrators cut through the border fence separating Israel from Gaza and attempted to set an unmanned sniper post on fire. When the IDF spotted the infiltration, it opened fire on them. One was killed, one was critically injured and transferred to an Israeli hospital, one was taken for questioning, and a fourth, reportedly injured, escaped back into Gaza.

The IDF blamed Hamas for the infiltration. “Hamas is accountable for all events transpiring within the Gaza Strip & emanating from it & is responsible for all attempts to cross the security fence & damage security infrastructure. The IDF views these events with great severity & will continue to respond appropriately,” the IDF said in a tweet.

The incident was the latest attempted infiltration, which have become more frequent in recent weeks. Last week, two teenagers attempting  to cross the border were fired on by an IDF tank and one was killed.

The situation on the border between the Gaza Strip and Israel has been tense over the past two months, when Hamas started orchestrating violent riots there. While the riots have subsided, Hamas has continued efforts to terrorize Israel by launching incendiary devices carried by kites, balloons, or even condoms, into Israel. These attacks have consumed roughly seven square miles of vegetation inside Israel.
