Following Series of Explosions at Gaza Border, Israel Tanks Fire on Hamas Positions

Israeli tanks fired on a number of Hamas targets inside the Gaza Strip, following a series of explosions caused by improvised explosive devices (IED) at Israel’s border with the Hamas-controlled enclave, The Times of  Israel reported Thursday.

“IDF troops retaliated by firing from a tank at positions belonging to the Hamas terrorist group,” the army said. Israel’s government has said that it holds Hamas, which has complete political and military control over the Gaza Strip, responsible for any violence emanating from the territory.

There were conflicting reports whether Hamas suffered any casualties from the Israeli retaliation. Israel reported that no one was injured from the terrorist-caused explosions.

Following an apparent assassination attempt on Palestinian Authority Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah earlier this week, the PA said that it held Hamas responsible for the “murderous” attempt on Hamdallah’s life.

A video showing the Israeli shelling hitting one of its targets was released, though it remained unclear how many sites were targeted.

IEDs are of concern to the IDF because they cheap and easy to make and can be detonated remotely. Last month four soldiers were injured, two seriously, by IEDs detonated near the border. Israel retaliated by striking at 18 Hamas targets including one tunnel entrance.
