Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas must stop inciting terror and paying families of terrorists and be encouraged to “pursue a new path” to peace, Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer (D – N.Y.) told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency (JTA) Monday.
“If President Trump plans to use this gathering to help pave the way towards peace between the Israelis and Palestinians, he should urge President Abbas to immediately pursue a new path,” Schumer said in an e-mail to the JTA, ahead of Trump’s meeting with Abbas on Tuesday.
In addition to calling on Trump to insist that Abbas stop paying salaries to terrorists and their families, he also said that the president should demand that the Palestinians stop inciting terror.
“It is perfectly fine for textbooks to celebrate one’s own cultural heritage and accomplishments, but it is simply unacceptable for those same textbooks to teach false narratives, promote anti-Semitism and deny Israel’s right to exist,” the senator said.
While Trump did not publicly bring up the issue when he met with Abbas earlier this month, two two leaders discussed it privately, according to a readout from the White House.
“Peace can never take root in an environment where violence is tolerated, funded and even rewarded,” Trump said during his joint appearance with Abbas in Bethlehem on Tuesday. “We must be resolute in condemning such acts in a single unified voice.”
