Just a day after Hezbollah launched a double bomb attack against Israeli soldiers, the leader of Lebanon’s pro-Western March 14 bloc Saad al-Hariri warned that Hezbollah is leading Lebanon into the “unknown”.
Former Prime Minister Saad Hariri Wednesday said Hezbollah’s latest operation against Israel in the border area of Shebaa was unacceptable.
“The insistence on weighing such options, whether they were made randomly or calculated on foreign agendas, does not only contribute to disrupting national efforts in the fight against terrorism and extremism, but again raises the issue of exiting national consensus to act [unilaterally] … in the country,” Hariri said in a statement.
Hariri added:
“Are thumbprints required from all the Lebanese to approve everything Hezbollah does and to justify its actions and policies?,” Hariri asked.
“It’s a matter of deep regret that some view the existing risks in this manner, and continue the policy of burying their heads in the sand while acknowledging Hezbollah’s exclusive right to set up military camps and wage wars in isolation from the state, the government and the [Lebanese] Army.”
Two Israeli soldiers were wounded when one of the roadside bombs was detonated in the Shebaa Farms (Har Dov) region of the border, close to the meeting point of the Syrian, Lebanese and Israeli frontiers.
Israel fully withdrew from Lebanese territory following the 2006 war with Hezbollah in accordance with United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701.
Hezbollah took responsibility for the attacks on its Al-Manar TV website. Analyst Daniel Nisman of the Levantine Group incriminated Hezbollah via his Twitter account beforehand, noting:
Although area has active presence of Syrian rebels, #Hezbollah is the only group with the skill to plant explosives on the border undetected
