Bereaved Family Asks UN’s Ban Ki-Moon to Condemn Hamas

Doron and Gila Tragerman, parents of four year old Daniel Tragerman who was killed August 22 by shrapnel from a mortar shell that was fired from Gaza, wrote a letter to United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon asking him “to speak out about Hamas war crimes.”

According to The Times of Israel, the letter said:

Daniel was killed from a mortar shell that was fired by Hamas members from an elementary school for boys in Gaza City. It wasn’t a stray shell. It wasn’t an accidental death.

He died in our hands, in front of his little sister and best friend Yuval, 3.5 years old. He died in front of Uri, only four months old and right before our eyes, his mother and father. We failed. We couldn’t protect our beautiful and talented baby.

The Tragermans also blasted the inquiry commission set up by the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) to investigate whether Israel committed war crimes during Operation Protective Edge.

The Investigation Committee is not asked to investigate how terrorists shoot out of UN buildings and schools. The Committee is not asked to investigate how inside buildings of the United Nations and in hospitals in Gaza terrorist infrastructure flourishes and maintains over time, or how from these places, terrorist activity is aimed against innocent people.

The head of the investigatory commission, William Schabas, has been embroiled in controversy since his appointment. Schabas’ impartiality has been called into question due to his expressed desire to try Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for war crimes, his refusal to call Hamas a terrorist organization and, most recently, his suggestion that Israel violated international law in its conduct of Operation Protective Edge.

The apparent bias of the commission prompted the United States Ambassador to the UN, Samantha Power, to blast the UNHRC as having “shown itself incapable of engaging constructively on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict,” and Sen. Charles Schumer (D-NY) to threaten defunding the UNHRC if it doesn’t remove Schabas.
