Day 49 – Journalist Released; Sly and Arnold Support Israel; Shin Bet Terror Stats

Today was the forty-ninth day of Operation Protective Edge.

IDF statistics for Operation Protective Edge show that, between July 8th and August 25th, more than 4,150 rockets and mortars have been fired at Israeli towns and cities.

Egypt has reportedly proposed a new ceasefire agreement that would open border crossings, deferring addressing hardline Hamas demands to a later date. However, a senior Hamas official denied that progress towards a ceasefire had been made.

Rocket and mortar fire from Gaza continued all day Monday, triggering sirens and alerts in the communities within 40 kilometers (24 miles) of the Gaza border and forcing hundreds of thousands of Israelis to repeatedly flee for cover.

The Tower today covered the release of journalist Peter Curtis. Curtis had been held by the Al Qaeda-related Nusra Front for two years in Syria. He had been handed over to United Nations troops on the Golan Heights and then transferred to Israel.

Nearly 200 Hollywood entertainers, led by Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger, signed a statement asserting that “Hamas cannot be allowed to rain rockets on Israeli cities.” Of particular note, the statement declared “we must also stand firm against ideologies of hatred and genocide which are reflected in Hamas’ charter.”

The Shin Bet released its terror statistics for July. In addition to the terror attributable to Hamas’ war against Israel, there has been a sharp increase in terror against Israel from the West Bank.

Hamas leader Moussa Abu Marzouk, in an interview with Al Jazeera last week, explained the executions of Gazans accused of helping Israel as necessary to “satisfy the people.” Reportedly, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas did not believe that “the alleged collaborators were given a fair trial.”

Calling Qatar “Club Med for terrorists,” Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations, Ron Prosor, wrote in an op-ed appearing today in The New York Times that Hamas’ rockets and tunnels may as well have had a sign on them stating “Made possible through a kind donation from the emir of Qatar.”
