Warming ties between Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood-linked government and the Iran-backed terror group Hamas are causing analysts to express concerns over Cairo’s future role in the region. This week Egypt dispatched to Gaza its sports minister, Al-Ameri Farouk, at the head of a 70-strong delegation. Palestinian media outlets carried fulsome praise for Egypt from Hamas leaders. Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood-linked President Mohamed Morsi is leading efforts to broker a reconciliation deal between Hamas and the relatively more moderate Fatah Palestinian faction. The traditional rivals have failed to strike a unity deal in the past due in part to differences revolving around Hamas’s commitment to the violent eradication of the Jewish state. It is unclear how the current negotiations will circumvent those past differences.
