Senior Israeli defense official Amos Gilad declared today that the regime of Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi is “an appalling dictatorship,” and outlined the degree to which ties between Jerusalem and Cairo have degraded since the Muslim Brotherhood-linked president took control of the Egyptian government. While emphasizing that the Camp David peace treaty between Israel and Egypt must be preserved at “any cost,” Gilad revealed that there is functionally no official contact between the top-tier political echelons of the two countries. Gilad has been at the forefront of managing Israeli relations with Egypt. His evaluation promises to undermine the analysis of some U.S.-based foreign policy experts who, after predicting that the Muslim Brotherhood would not attempt to seize the Egyptian presidency, have since forecast that the pressures of accountability would force Muslim Brotherhood-linked politicians to rule as moderates.
