Russia Dispatches New Flotilla Of Warships Into Mediterranean

Gesturing toward the spiraling anarchy in Syria, Russia has reportedly dispatched a new flotilla of warships into the Mediterranean. Five vessels, including a frigate and two landing ships, set sail from Baltiysk. Officially, the ships are in the theater to carry out maneuvers and replace an existing flotilla. Moscow sources, however, indicated that the assets could be used to evacuate Russian nationals should the situation deteriorate further and Assad’s regime lose control, which a top Russian military official recently acknowledged as a possibility. Two Russians and an Italian were kidnapped on the Syrian Tartus-Homs highway on Tuesday and as many as 30,000 Russians live in the country. Russia also maintains a facility in the Syrian port Tartus, and Moscow remains largely supportive of Damascus.
