Residents in the Gaza Strip have posted large billboards highlighting close ties between Iran and that territory’s ruling Hamas terror group. The billboards thank Tehran for assisting Palestinian terror groups in battling Israelis, and the Associate Press commented that the posters’ “prominent location, at busy intersections and next to a destroyed Hamas security compound, as well as the fact that they were not removed, indicated that [Hamas and Islamic Jihad representatives] were involved in” posting them. Satellite images described publicly over the weekend showed that Iran is moving quickly to rearm its Palestinian proxy in the aftermath of Israel’s Operation Pillar of Defense, which degraded huge swaths of the terror group’s advanced assets as part of a campaign that foreign policy analysts are now describing as having “ended with material gains for Israel and material losses—men and arms—for its opponent.” Evidence of unbroken ties between Iran and Hamas – with Tehran supplying advanced weapons to the terror group before and after Operation Pillar of Defense – calls into question analysis used to promote engagement with Hamas on the premise of strained ties between it and Iran.
