Protests in Cairo Leave Dozens Injured

Protests in Cairo, marking the second anniversary of the Arab Spring uprising that saw the regime of Hosni Mubarak overthrown in favor of what would eventually become an elected Muslim Brotherhood-linked Egyptian government, have left dozens injured. Police officers across the country worked to contain similar riots, using tear gas against crowds of demonstrators who threw rocks and burned tires. The unrest was widely seen as a result of ongoing and increasing dissatisfaction with the policies of incumbent President Mohamed Morsi. The Muslim Brotherhood-linked president has recently engaged in a series of power grabs seen as limiting civil freedoms, and the country’s new constitution – drafted by the country’s Islamist-dominated constitutional assembly – has been criticized for emphasizing Islamic law at the expense of women and religious minority rights.
