Protests continue to roil Egypt in the aftermath of a power grab by Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi. The Muslim Brotherhood-linked President issued a decree more than a week ago reserving for himself broad powers and insulating him from judicial review, prompting widespread protests in response to what many Egyptians saw as a return to the dictatorial era of deposed Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak. Egypt’s Islamist-led assembly attempted to deal with the crisis by rushing through the draft of a new constitution prompting further widespread protests by groups opposing both the procedures used to pass the draft and the perceived Islamist content of the new constitution itself. The Los Angeles Times quoted an Egyptian business owner fearing that “if this constitution is passed, Egypt will become a Brotherhood nation.”
