Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi is still scrambling to contain diplomatic damage from revelations that he linked classical Islamist anti-Semitic tropes – references to “apes and pigs” – with calls for Egyptian children to be taught to hate Israelis. The Muslim Brotherhood-linked president was repeatedly asked about the statements while on a trip to Germany. A previous attempt by Morsi to explain away the statements, at that time to a Senate delegation, devolved when Morsi asserted that the controversy was a function of Jewish control of American media. Meanwhile political instability continues to simmer in Egyptian cities, and the Egyptian opposition has called for a unity government. Morsi has rejected that option.
