Jordanian security forces are scrambling to deal with a range of internal and external security threats. On Monday, a Jordanian soldier was killed as government troops battled with armed militants crossing the border between Jordan and Syria, heightening fears that Syria’s civil war would spill into into Jordan. Meanwhile, Jordanian security officers arrested 11 terrorists who were planning a mass attack again civilian and government targets. The al-Qaeda-linked plot indicates that the Jordanian government may be the next to feel the political unrest which has engulfed much of the Arab world, and which has seen Islamists seize power in countries formerly aligned with the West.
