Iran is seeking to advance its penetration of South and Central America, deepening concerns by analysts and top U.S. intelligence officials that Iran will use the region as a platform for launching attacks against the United States. In the upcoming days, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for European and American Affairs Ali Asghar Khaji will visit Bolivia, Cuba, and Uruguay to discuss “mutual cooperation,” having declared months ago that Iran would look to Latin America as a route for breaking out of international sanctions and “promoting a new world order.” Tehran has long-standing military, economic, and diplomatic ties to Venezuela and has been aggressively courting Bolivia.
