Gunfire Strikes Golan Heights Amid Hezbollah, Iran Threats Against Israel

Unknown gunmen in Syria fired bullets into the Golan Heights, underscoring ongoing deterioration in the increasingly anarchic area. Both the Bashar al-Assad regime and rebels seeking its overthrow have pledged to attack Israel from the strategically important plateau.

The gunfire struck near an IDF observation post in the latest incident of bullets and bombs being fired at Israel from areas in Syria where rebels are battling government forces bolstered by fighters from the Iran-backed terror group Hezbollah.

Iranian Press TV quoted Iranian Chief of Staff aide Massoud Jazayeri on how a “new Syria” would soon “liberate the Golan”:

‘From a security and military perspective, I should say the liberation of Golan [Heights] is not impossible; it can happen,’ said Deputy Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces Major General Massoud Jazayeri in an interview with the Lebanese television Al-Manar. ‘It seems that we will be witnessing fundamental changes in the region in the next several months, in which case we will [also] witness a new Syria,’ the Iranian commander added.

The Iranian outlet also cited Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah echoing promises to liberate the Golan Heights.
