The Financial Action Task Force (FATF), an intergovernmental organization charged with combating money laundering and terrorist financing, may blacklist Turkey for “inadequate monitoring of bank transfers and unwillingness to freeze accounts” associated with terrorist activities. Turkey has responded by insisting that while the country intends to implement FATF rules, “parliament’s agenda is just busy.” Should FATF call upon its member countries to implement the countermeasures against Turkey, it would put Ankara on a list of non-complying nations that includes North Korea and Iran, and complicate efforts by the ruling Justice and Development Party to turn Turkey into a regional power and mediator.
