Blasts were heard today in the Israeli resort Eilat, raising fears that Islamists had fired rockets in the direction of that city. No shrapnel have been found so far, but Eilat and its surrounding areas have been targeted by rockets from the Sinai several times during the past year.
The incidents happened amid a wave of attacks staged by Islamist gunmen against security forces in the Sinai Peninsula early on Friday, timed two days after the army forced Islamist President Mohammed Morsi from power. Security sources said that one soldier was killed and two were wounded when a police station in Rafah, on Egypt’s border with the Gaza Strip came under rocket fire.
The police post is close to the local headquarters of Egypt’s military intelligence.
