Europe may change its policy and soon start supplying arms to rebel forces fighting to overthrow the Syrian regime of Bashar al-Assad, according to British Prime Minister David Cameron. European foreign ministers are reviewing the current arms embargo on Syria, and cited a strategic imperative to bolster moderate opposition forces in order to push back against a “growing cohort of Al-Qaida-linked extremists” in the country. Western analysts are increasingly concerned that any resolution to the Syrian crisis will see extremists empowered, and that Syria will end up ruled either by Assad’s regime or by hardline Islamists.
