Egypt’s struggle to create a new constitution was at the center of marches in Cairo’s Tahrir Square on Friday, as about 10,000 Salafist protesters took to the streets to demand the immediate implementation of strict Islamic law. CNN reports that the Muslim Brotherhood, with which the government of Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi is affiliated, differs from Egyptian Salafists inasmuch as the Muslim Brotherhood seeks gradual rather than immediate implementation of Islamic law. Meanwhile Copts and other Egyptian religious minorities have been forced from their homes by worsening Islamist violence, which the Morsi government has not yet stemmed.
