Another video of Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood officials calling for the eradication of Israel has been unearthed. This one shows Saad El-Katatni, now chairman of the Brotherhood’s Freedom and Justice Party (FJP), calling for “the destruction of Israel” and declaring that “the peoples are ready [for] jihad.” The footage was taken at a rally in Cairo during the Second Lebanon War between Israel and Hezbollah. Katatni was chosen to head the Freedom and Justice Party on October 19, 2012. The following day he described the party’s mission to Egypt’s leading Al-Ahram daily. His sentiments will not go far in dampening concerns that the Egyptian Arab Spring which empowered the Muslim Brotherhood may have paved the way for a hard-line Islamist state:
Katatny hailed his election as “a first step” towards achieving the goals of the FJP, according to Egypt’s Al-Ahram newspaper. In this respect, Katatny was quoted as saying that “The Muslim Brotherhood established the [FJP] to represent the Brotherhood’s political project, which, in the end, will be a wise government that will institute Islamic Shari’a law.”
The week before, Brotherhood Supreme Guide Mohammed Badie called on Muslims worldwide to “recover” Jerusalem by means of jihad.
The video of El-Katatni is the latest in a long line of clips, recently translated and posted by the watchdog group MEMRI, showing prominent Egyptian officials giving voice to anti-Semitic vitriol. In January MEMRI released footage showing Egypt’s Brotherhood-linked president Mohamed Morsi calling on Egyptians to “nurse our children and our grandchildren on hatred” for Jews and describing Israelis as “these bloodsuckers who attack the Palestinians, these warmongers, the descendants of apes and pigs.” When confronted over the footage, Morsi told U.S. senators that the controversy was being driven by a Jewish-controlled media.
