More Than 80 Dead in Nice, France After Terror Attack

More than 80 people were killed and scores more injured after a truck rammed into a crowd in Nice, France on Thursday evening.

The driver steered his car into a group of people who had just finished watching fireworks to celebrate Bastille Day, France’s national holiday, on the city’s prominent Promenade des Anglais. Witnesses said that he drove for 2-3 miles, mowing people down along his path, before emerging and shooting at passersby. He was eventually shot and killed by police.

French President Francois Hollande called the incident a “criminal attack,” though investigations are ongoing. Hollande announced today that the French government would lift its state of emergency on July 26. The state of emergency was declared last November after 130 people were killed following a series of coordinated ISIS-inspired terrorist attacks at a Paris concert venue, soccer stadium, and restaurant. Other ISIS-connected terrorist attacks took place in Paris in January 2015, when 12 people were killed at the headquarters of the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo and four more killed at a kosher grocery store.

Three similar vehicular incidents took place in France in 2014, when truck drivers shouting “Allahu Akbar” plowed their cars into crowds.
