Netanyahu Announces Plans To Build Security Fence Along Israeli-Syrian Border

Citing the risk of spillover from the conflict raging in Syria, Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has announced plans to build a security fence along the Israeli-Syrian border. Western analysts have become increasingly concerned about the degree to which Sunni-backed opposition forces have been infiltrated by hard-line Islamist elements, with the al-Qaeda-linked al-Nusra group having become particularly prominent. Israeli planners have had demonstrated success building and maintaining anti-infiltration fences. A fence built during Intifada II was linked to a near-total halt in terrorist infiltration from the West Bank during the conflict, and Israel’s fence along the Gaza Strip has been almost completely successful in preventing infiltration from that area.
