London mayor Sadiq Khan has called on UK Home Secretary Amber Rudd to outlaw Hezbollah’s political and military wing, after flags of the Iran-backed terror group were openly flown during al-Quds Day in the capital last month, The Times of Israel reported Thursday.
During the rally, children were draped in Hezbollah flags and organizers distributed placards emblazoned with the slogan, “We are all Hezbollah.” The marchers chanted “From the river to the sea,” a chant calling for the elimination of the Jewish state.
The so-called military wing of Hezbollah has been proscribed by the British government, but attempts by figures from across the political spectrum to have the political wing of the organization banned have so far failed. Hezbollah—whose own leaders acknowledge that there is no distinction between their political and military branches—is banned in full by the U.S., Canada, and the Arab League.
Conservative London assembly member Andrew Boff, who repeatedly urged Khan to write to the Home Secretary to have Hezbollah banned, welcomed the decision but questioned why it took authorities so long to act.
“We welcome news that the mayor has finally been pressured into taking action against this appalling anti-Semitic organisation but why has it taken him weeks to do so?” Boff said. “He is taking action now because he was asked again by a member of his own party and is under pressure to act,” he added.
