Israeli Ambassador Elected to Serve as VP of UN General Assembly

Israel’s ambassador was elected on Wednesday to serve as vice president of the United Nations’ General Assembly, a year after being elected to head a permanent committee at the UN for the first time.

Ambassador Danny Danon will serve as vice president of the General Assembly when the UN convenes its next session in September, helping to chair meetings of the GA and set its agenda, The Jerusalem Post reported. Leaders of the GA are selected in a rotation assuring equitable geographic representation. Danon was elected as part of the Western European and Others regional group.

The newly elected president of the GA is Slovakian Foreign Minister Miroslav Lajcák.

“It is an honor to represent the State of Israel in this leadership position at the United Nations,” Danon said after the election. “We have proven once again that Israel is ready and able to serve in significant positions in the UN and the attempts to block this progress will not succeed.”

Danon was elected last year to head the the UN’s Sixth Committee, which deals with legal issues, despite lobbying against him by Muslim and Arab nations.
