The Syrian army is now using advanced Russian weapons, a sign of increased Russian involvement in the country’s civil war, Reuters reported today. The reported cited a Syrian military source.
“The weapons are highly effective and very accurate, and hit targets precisely,” the source said in response to a question about Russian support. “We can say they are all types of weapons – be it air or ground.”
The source said the army had been trained in the use of the weapons in recent months and was now deploying them, declining to give further details other than saying they were “new types”.
It was reported earlier this month that Russian troops were fighting for the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
Secretary of State John Kerry said Wednesday that he told Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov “that Russia’s continued support for Assad risks escalating the conflict.”
Russia’s growing support of Syria has prompted a scheduled visit by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to Russia to express concerns about advanced Russian weaponry falling into the hands of Hezbollah.
