New Knesset Will Include Greater Number of Women, Arabs

Although there will be some minor adjustments made in the vote totals as results from army bases and absentee ballots are counted, the makeup of the 20th Knesset has mostly been determined, and it will have greater representation of women and Arabs.

The Jerusalem Post reports:

For the second time in a row, the Knesset broke its record for female parliamentarians, with 28, as opposed to 27 in the 19th Knesset. There will be eight female MKs in Zionist Union, six in Likud, four in Kulanu, three in Yesh Atid, two in Meretz and one each in Bayit Yehudi and Yisrael Beytenu. There are two lists in the Knesset with no women in them: Shas and UTJ.

The number of Arab MKs jumped from 12 to 17, in part because the parties making up the Joint List’s numbers went up from 10 to 13, and also because Likud and Zionist Union each added an Arab MK.

The Likud increased its representation in Knesset by ten seats to 30. (In 2013, it ran on a joint list with Yisrael Beiteinu; 20 of the seats of the combined party were Likud’s.) The Zionist Union, a slate combining the Labor and Hatnuah parties, increased its representation by three seats, as did the Joint List, a collection of Arab parties.

Yesh Atid, the party headed by former Finance Minister Yair Lapid, lost eight seats, decreasing from 19 to 11. Shas and Bayit Yehudi lost four seats each.

The new Knesset will have 38 first-time legislators.
