Livni Offers Vision for Demilitarized Gaza Under the PA

Israel envisions a demilitarized Gaza where Palestinian civilians receive humanitarian aid and supplies, but Hamas is cut off from getting resupplied with materials or money, according to Justice Minister Tzipi Livni.

Livni headed the Israeli peace negotiations with the Palestinians, but has been a mainstream supporter of Operation Protective Edge. She presented her ideas for what she wants to see in a ceasefire agreement during an Israel Radio interview.

She emphasized that Israel will not give Hamas a prize by negotiating with them. The only “legitimate” organization which can practically govern over Gaza, according to Livni, is the PA.

In order that all the crazy, terrorists and Islamists in the area will understand that Israel is not paying for quiet, we need a new order in Gaza that comprises two elements. And with the two of these it’s possible to get today and (even) yesterday the support of the world:

The first is the security of Israel – the goal that Gaza for the long term will be demilitarized. This has immediate significance – all material that will be transferred to Gaza as of tomorrow morning, aside from humanitarian aid, will be inspected and will only go for projects. Money will not be given to terror, rather only to the population and there will be a definitive separation so that the population that was affected there can rebuild anew but Hamas will not.

The second issue for the long term, I’d like to see that same legitimate Palestinian Authority that accepts our existence here, that does not give in to terror itself or who doesn’t use terrorism against us as a replacement that will turn it into the legitimate government in Gaza.  That is also for the long term. For the immediate term there is a place for them on the border crossings.
