An IDF soldier was shot near Hebrew University in Jerusalem’s Mount Scopus campus late this afternoon. The suspected terrorist responsible was clad in all black and fled on a motorcycle.
An IDF soldier was shot in the stomach by a suspected terrorist in a tunnel in Jerusalem’s Mount Scopus Monday afternoon, less than three hours after a separate terrorist attack took the life of a pedestrian in the capital. …
“Multiple shots were fired, one man was hit in the stomach and rushed to the hospital in serious condition,” said police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld. “Police units are now searching the area for the vehicle the suspect drove and hope to make an arrest shortly.”
Officials at the Hebrew University stressed that the university campus was secure, and that the shooting had taken place outside the university compound.
Responding to the two attacks, Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat said Israelis and especially Jerusalem residents must remain vigilant, “and no less important, continue with their daily lives.”
Barkat stressed that disrupting Israeli life “is exactly what the terrorists are trying to do to us,” adding that civilians in the country “mustn’t give the [terrorists] that reward.”
Earlier today a Palestinian man rammed an excavator into a bus on a Jerusalem street. In his attack he killed one pedestrian and wounded six others before he was killed.
It has been reported that a Hamas spokesman praised the earlier attack today as “brave” and “natural.”
In a statement, Hamas spokesperson Fawzi Barhoum said that “the action in Jerusalem was very brave, a natural response to the occupation.”
Hamas called on Arabs around Israel to continue conducting terror attacks. “We call on those living in the West Bank and Jerusalem to continue fighting, no one needs to command them what to do.”
Hamas has been calling for an “uprising” against Israel by Arabs throughout Operation Protective Edge, turning mass attacks into a “third intifada.” Arabs have been rioting since the beginning of the operation, with an upswing in violence in recent days, police said.
Since the beginning of the year there have been increased concerns over Hamas’ growing influence and heightened levels of violence in the West Bank.
